I have been really quite domesticated this weekend and made my own baby food! I knew that fresh is best when it came to baby food, yet struggled to find the time and motivation to make it myself. Late last week I was about to give my daughter some ‘healthy’, organic, natural baby food when I looked at the nutrition content and almost fell over. In a single serving this baby food had over 22g of sugar in it! If you don’t feel as shocked or as angry as I do, then let me break it down for you:
An average adult on a 2,000 calorie per day diet should only be having 25g of sugar per day. This is 3g more than one serving of baby food.
So off I went to make my own baby food!
2 pears (diced for quicker cooking time)
approximately 150g of green beans (chopped)
1/4 cup to 1/3 cup peas
It sounds like a strange combination but it is by far my daughters favourite combination!
Just cook (boil or steam) and mash to desired consistency.
Depending on your budget, you can buy organic or commercial produce make a large batch and freeze for later use.
The containers I bought are stackable and have a silicone bottom to help push out the frozen food. I have heard of a lot of ladies who then put the frozen portion in a zip-lock bag labelled with the date and ingredients (this helps save room in your freezer, if it is already over filled like mine!)
